IOI'95 - Newsletter 2

[ IOI Home page ] Newsletter 2

Hello World,

Only two more months before the Day of Arrival, the day when you will come to IOI'95. We are doing all we can to be ready for you. We are very glad that 53 countries responded in a positive way to our invitation. We are expecting some more.

This letter is accompanied by a Registration Form. Please make as many copies as you need (one per person), fill them out to your best knowledge and send them to us by e- mail, fax or mail. If there are any changes: send us the altered Registration Form. Around the 15th of June you will receive another newsletter, the last one.

And now for the news:

Addresses before the Olympiad

Until June 23rd you can contact us by e-mail R.Kock@slo.nl, (mail will be answered every evening), by fax (+31 53 307692) and by telephone (+31 53 840840, ask for Ries or Marian of the Olympiad in Informatics 95). Postal address: Marian Nijhuis, IOI'95 Secretariat, POBox 2041, 7500 CA Enschede, The Netherlands.

Addresses during the Olympiad

E-mail
ioi95@win.tue.nl, fax (+31 40 475111), telephone (+31 474700), postal address: IOI'95, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, PO Box 513, 5600 MB Eindhoven. The e-mail, fax and telephone will be answered day and night by our Team of Creative Solutions.

Transport

The organisation of IOI'95 will take care of transportation from and to Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) and from and to Eindhoven Railway Station. There will be no IOI-service from and to Eindhoven Airport. At Amsterdam Airport students in blouses with the IOI'95 logo will be waiting for you in the Arrivals Hall (after you have reclaimed your luggage). They will accompany you to the buses.

Guides and the Team of Creative Solutions

Every country will have a
student as guide to accompany your team during the Olympiad. The Team of Creative Solutions is there to solve any problems (if one of you needs a doctor for example). You will meet them in Eindhoven.

Lodging

All teams will stay in the holiday homes at Centre Parcs 'De Kempervennen' near Valkenswaard, about 20 kilometres South of Eindhoven. We have rented 6 person homes and 8 person homes. You will find the floorplans in Lodging6.bmp and
Lodging6.gif, resp. Lodging8.bmp and Lodging8.gif. Your country will have its own home. Breakfast will be served at your home. Each home has a refrigerator and a television set. Sheets, blankets and towels are provided and will be changed once during the week. On the Centre Parc grounds, within walking distance, you will find a bank, telephones, a supermarket, some shops, restaurants (we will dine there on Tuesday), pubs and a spectacular swimming pool to which you have free entrance.

Currency

The currency in The Netherlands is the 'gulden' (Dutch guilder). At the moment 1 US dollar = 1.54 Dutch guilder. The bank at Centre Parcs is small and will change American dollars and a number of European currencies. The same holds for the bank at the university. Larger banks in Eindhoven will change almost any currency. The best way to change your money is to do it at Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) or at the Grenswissel- kantoren-bank at the railway station. Credit cards like VISA or Mastercard are accepted at all banks and most of them have 'money automats' which operate 24 hours a day.

Climate

Our weather is fickle! At the end of June we may have lovely days: sunny with a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, but it may also be rainy with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius. Be prepared and bring a raincoat or an umbrella.

Frequently asked questions

When will the Opening Ceremony be? And the Closing Ceremony? The Opening Ceremony will take place on Monday June 26 at 18.00 hours at the Evoluon, the futuristic Philips exhibition building, where we will also have dinner. The Closing Ceremony will take place on Sunday July 2 at 17.00 hours at the Frits Philips Music Hall in the centre of Eindhoven. The reception and dinner after the ceremony will be at the same place.

Language

We speak Dutch in The Netherlands, but most people in the shops and in the streets understand and speak English.

Food

Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary wishes, religious or vegetarian. As good hosts we will try to provide each of you with acceptable meals, but we need advance notice.

Software

Every computer will have MsDos 6.2, Borland C++ 3.0 (US version under Dos, not under Windows), Microsoft Quick Basic 4.5 (US version under Dos, not under Windows) and Turbo Pascal 7.0 (US version under Dos, not under Windows). For the translati- ons the teamleaders will be provided with Microsoft Office with MS Word 6.0 and WordPerfect 6.1 (US versions under Windows). Information on directories and last instructions will be sent to you in the last newsletter (around June 15) and/or distributed on the day before the first contest day. Each student will have the opportunity for some practice on the equipment as it will be used during the contest, either at Centre Parcs or at the university.

Hardware

Tulip, one of the main sponsors, will provide 375 Pentium 75 MHz computers for IOI'95. Both at Centre Parcs and at the university some of them will be available for your students to have a feel and a touch.

Meetings

See the
regulations and the program.

Emergencies at home

The Team of Creative Solutions will get the message to you as soon as possible. Don't forget to inform your home front how to contact them. See Addresses. You will find public telephones at Centre Parcs, at the university and in Eindhoven. You can send e-mail at the university.

World Wide Web

This information and more is also available on World Wide Web; start at page
http://olympiads.win.tue.nl/ioi/ and/or http://olympiads.win.tue.nl/ioi95/. Tom Verhoeff created the pages and the connections to other pages. Part of the World Wide Web pages is reproduced on the disk, for the instructions: read IOI-WWW.TXT. Tom has included all the problems of previous olympiads and his solutions to the Stockholm problems.

The flags and the photos

In the first newsletter we asked you to bring the flag of your country with you to The Netherlands. Please don't forget: we will ask for it at the registration desk on the day of arrival. We want to have 2 passport photos of each of you. We will ask for them at the registration desk.
