International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO)

The International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) is an annual astronomy competition for high-school students. It is one of the International Science Olympiads. It was founded on June 7, 1996, by the Euro-Asian Astronomical Society.

According to the Founding Statutes of the IAO (see below), it is held every year, sometime in the period from September to December, in one of the astronomical centres of the IAO member-states. School children of several age groups take part in the IAO.

Important note for interested participants: According to the Statutes of the IAO, in the case of absence of a National team from a state, the regions, cities and towns of this state are responsible (by a permit of the Coordinating Council) to take part in the IAO.

A list of recommended astronomy literature for self-study is contemplated.
